Collection Description & Arrangement
The files are arranged alphabetically. The first six folders contain specific information on the SLF history and membership, and correspondence on financial matters, Rhodesia, and Ridley Whitaker Memorial. Following these are 20 folders of correspondence and finally a minute book of Forum meetings.
The correspondence include Ralph Bunche, Justice Harold H. Burton, Archibald Cox, J. W. Fullbright, John Foster Dulles, Justice William O. Douglas, Justice Felix Frankfurter, Gerald Ford, Barry Goldwater, Mills Goodwin, Robert F. Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, John Lindsay, Thurgood Marshall, William Proxmire, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., George Romney, David Rockerfeller, Eric Severeid, Arthur Schelsinger, and Justice Potter Stewart.
Also included is a scrapbook of Student Legal Forum clippings and a card file on speakers. The creator and/ or donor of the scrapbbok are unknown; it begins with clippings about each of the speakers during the school term 1950-1951 when Robert Kennedy was president of the SLF, and the latest items are dated 1957.
Biographical & Historical Information
The Student Legal Forum was founded in 1947 by Ridley Whitaker, Law Class of 1948. Organized to bring prominent speakers to the Law School, the SLF was funded partially by membership and initiation fees, alumni contributions to the Ridley Whitaker Memorial Fund, and Student Council Funds.
This group of records spans 1946 to 1969, although the first Forum lectures were given in 1947 and these files were officially closed in 1966.
