Richard E. Byrd, American naval officer, polar explorer and Virginian, led five expeditions to Antartica and was the first man to fly over the North and South Poles. He explored much of Antartica in a series of expeditions between 1928 and 1947. Pictured in this photograph are his expeditionary airplanes at Norfolk airport.
