Collection Description & Arrangement

This collection contains 34 handwritten diaries written by Homan W. Walsh, a Charlottesville lawyer, spanning the years 1930-1963. These diaries contain Mr. Walsh daily plans and some observations on different topics.

Biographical & Historical Information

Homan Watson Walsh was born in Lockport, New York, September 7, 1882.  He graduated from Harvard College in 1903 and received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1906.  In 1907 he was admitted to the Bar in Virginia and moved to Charlottesville where he practiced law with Daniel Harmon.  Between 1921-1926 he was part of the Allen, Walsh and Michie law firm with Charles W. Allen and Judge Thomas J. Michie.  From 1926 to1946 he was associated with Judge Lyttelton Waddell and with Judge George M. Coles. From 1946 to 1959 he served as vice-president and Trust Officer of the Peoples National Bank of Charlottesville and then became its Director until 1963.

He served as Chairman of the Charlottesville School Board (1939-1952); Chairman of the Charlottesville Library Board (1932-1952); Vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church,  member of the Board of Trustees of  Martha Jefferson Hospital, and member of many other organization in Charlottesville.

In 1945 he served as president of the Virginia State Bar. “He was a skilled draftsman, an able lawyer and his grasp and knowledge of the law was unequalled by any other member of the legal profession.”  (The Virginia State Bar Association.  Registration of the Second Widwinter Meeting …, Richmond, Lewis Printing Co., 1965, p. 238-240).
