Biographical Information

Walter L. Brown received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in 1924 and his law degree in 1926. He was a Rhodes Scholar, and was vice president and general counsel for Western Electric Company in New York. He helped to create the Law School Foundation, served on its Board of Trustees, and became its president. He also was director of the Henry L. and Grace Doherty Foundation and a member of the Alumni Board of Trustees of the University of Virginia Endowment Fund. Former Law School Dean Monrad Paulsen said of Brown, “[His] services to the University and particularly its Law School are beyond count. He has given of his time and wise counsel for many years. With his help the Law School and the University have been the recipients of generous gifts.” Brown died in 1975. The Henry L. and Grace Doherty Foundation endowed a Professorship in Law in his honor. Brown Hall, home to the Arthur J. Morris Library, is also named in his honor.
